Leslie Carrara-Rudolph

Leslie Carrara-Rudolph is a multi-faceted entertainer, puppeteer, voice-over artist, writer and creator. She is best known for performing Abby Cadabby on Sesame Street, for which she has received 5 Emmy nominations for Best Performer in a Children's Series. She was recently nominated for an Annie Award for Outstanding Achivement in Voice Acting for her character Bubbles on the Jim Henson Company's Splash And Bubbles.
 
A graduate of San Francisco State University (BA, Child Development Through The Arts), Leslie got her start as a puppeteer on ABC's Muppets Tonight.

Leslie's dedication to children's entertainment extends from her outreach work with kids at risk to writing content for her original character Lolly Lardpop. Leslie's original writing has been developed at the Ojai Playwright's Conference and the Eugene O'Neill Puppetry Conference, and she has received an UNIMA Citation of Excellence and a Jim Henson Foundation grant for her show "Wake Up Your Weird", which debuted off-Broadway in NYC at the Marjorie S. Dean Little Theater.

Television credits include Sesame Street (Abby Cadabby and numerous characters, 9 Emmy wins for Outstanding Preschool Series), Jim Henson Company's Splash And Bubbles (Henson DPS puppeteer/Bubbles, nominated for a 2017 Annie Award) Disney’s Johnny and the Sprites (puppeteer/Ginger Sprite), PBS' Nature Cat, Nickelodeon’s animated series T.U.F.F. Puppy (Peg Puppy), and The Electric Company Haunted House cartoon sketches (Wolfman, Mummy, and Bat).

She has performed throughout the US and internationally in Canada, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Australia.

Mike Lopez

Mike Lopez is an educator, artist, and writer, who’s main mission is to bring the positive message of the arts to young people. Along with other artists, writers and actors, Mike has presented his “Positively Inspiring Young People With the Arts” workshop in New York City, Washington DC, Boston and Atlantic City. It is during these workshops that teachers, librarians, camp directors and anyone who wants to creatively inspire young people are able to gather ideas, network and learn from professionals.

In 2015, Mike, along side with artist Gary Eckerson, created “Life’s A Beach”, which follows the good natured fun of the kids of Avalon Beach.

Come and meet Mike and be inspired to do amazing things for young people!

Alex Simmons –

Alex Simmons is a professional freelance writer, teaching artist, and public speaker, as well as an arts & education consultant.

Simmons has penned over 17 middle school and YA novels. As a writer of comics and graphic novels, he has created and written the critically acclaimed adventure series, BLACKJACK, about an African-American soldier of fortune in the 1930s. He received the 2010 Glyph Best Writer Award for his work with Archie & Friends, especially, The Cartoon Life of Chuck Clayton (both series for Archie Comics). Simmons co-created an African-American hero for DC Comics' Batman books, and chronicled several tales of Scooby Doo. He's also created 12 interactive mysteries for the Tiger Toys electronic game WHO DONE IT (which received three educational awards).

For over 20 years Simmons has written (and in some cases also created) a number of juvenile mysteries under a variety of pseudonyms for many well-known publishers. He has penned articles for magazines; two educational documentaries; several stage plays; three movie novelizations for Disney and three biographies for Steck-Vaughn, including one on Denzel Washington.

Simmons is the founder and co producer of the annual KIDS’ COMIC CON (an age appropriate comic book convention for children, families, and educators now celebrating its 11TH ANNIVERSARY), which has brought fun, art, literacy and science to children from New York to Africa.

Simmons is also the founder and curator of the COLOR OF COMICS art exhibition (containing images from artists around the globe) representing the portrayal of people of color in comics. This event was chosen by the American Embassy Dakar to be part of the Fessman International Cultural Arts Festival in Senegal Africa, in December 2010.

Simmons has been brought in as a guest speaker to talk about such matters as literacy, arts-n-education, diversity, and more. He's given workshops on science and super heroes, journalism, and playwriting to students and teachers in varying socio-economic levels.

10:00 – 10:45 – Kids Portfolio Reviews with Professionals and Free drawing and coloring for all! Come and draw with the pros! Also bring your own artwork and creations to share with others and get feedback from people in the industry. 

11:00 – 11:45 – Careers in the Creative Arts  
Calling all young people! Join educator and crusader for arts and education Mike Lopez, along with puppeteer Leslie Carrara-Rudolph (Sesame Street, Splash & Bubbles), artists Diana Leto (My Little Pony) & Michael Grassia, writer Alex Simmons (Archie, Batman, Scooby Doo), as they discuss opportunities and suggestions to young people looking to get into the Creative Arts. Come prepared with your questions and wonderings, because we will give you the advice to guide you. 

1:00 – 1:45 - My Little Pony Cartooning Workshop with Diana Leto 
Pinkie Pie brings cheer and playfulness to brighten her friends’ days. She loves eating sweets and throwing parties for all her friends. She also enjoys helping people in need and she knows how to turn any frown upside down! A professional character artist and art director for over a decade, Diana Leto, will teach kids how to draw Pinkie Pie and their other favorite ponies. 


2:00 – 2:45 – Leslie & Lolly Make Stuff Up! 
Join Emmy Award Nominated SESAME STREET Puppeteer Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and her hilarious sock puppet sidekick Lolly Lardpop in, LESLIE & LOLLY MAKE STUFF UP, an interactive event all about exploring your imagination and bringing your ideas to life in fun and whimsical ways. Original music, stories, artwork and a cast of unique puppet characters chock full o' joy & laughter!

This amazing hands-on workshop demonstrates how to explore and create superheroes and villains using the boundless regions of science and the imaginative realm of comics. Kids will discuss the powers and abilities of popular comic book characters, and then create their own. 

 4:00 – 4:45 – Comic Strips Made Easy with Michael Grassia 
Travel of a fun, exciting, creative adventure as you learn the simple techniques to bring your imagination to life. Learn what goes into making a comic strip while you make your very own.

Join educator & co-creator of “Life’s A Beach”, Mike Lopez, for this fun workshop where you will learn to draw your favorite cartoon characters, as well make-up your own. Participants will learn the tricks of the trade to create their own comic strips.  

3:00 – 3:45 – The Art of Making Comics with Alex Simmons 
Action, adventure, sci-fi and humor! These are some of the arenas artists and fans have explored for generations. The Art of Making Comics can help buddying artists by introducing them to the whole process of creating comics- from idea to script, to full color art and publication. Professional writer and publisher Alex Simmons (Batman, Tarzan, Archie, Blackjack, & Race Against Time, etc.) explains jobs, terms, writing tips and helps you make your own comic!

Learn from master cartoonist Michael Grassia, the basic cartooning skills needed to create your own characters and backgrounds with nothing more than some simple shapes and your imagination.

Michael Grassia is a cartoonist and educator that creates all-ages cartoons. He created the educational website getintoon.net which is devoted to the art of cartooning. There you will find tutorials, interviews with artists in the field, downloadable how-to-draw sheets and coloring pages, all for free. Remember...there is always time to get in toon!

Diana Leto –

You may recognize Diana Leto's name from her cover artwork for IDW’s MY LITTLE PONY and DARK HORSE’s Jungle Tales of Tarzan. A professional character artist and art director for over a decade, she has made a name for herself creating art for world class clients like Nickelodeon, Jim Henson Legacy, Sesame Street, Dark Horse comics, IDW Comics, and Warner Bros.

Diana earned her “Tarzan Yell” as the illustrator for the comic adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs “The Cave Girl” and is the colorist for the latest incarnation of “Carson of Venus”.

Her artwork is featured in Dark Horse’s graphic novel “The Halloween Legion”, the critically acclaimed and Stan Lee Excelsior nominated all-ages adventure, of which she is co-creator. She is an active participant and presenter at Kids Comic Con and Adobe MAX, promoting literacy, education, and by example, gender equality in the professional arts.
